Mathare: a neighbourhood guide

Mathare sub-county covers Hospital, Mabatini, Huruma, Ngei, Mlango Kubwa and Kiamaiko wards, along the Mathare River valley. It is a dense, energetic community with a famous love of football.

Mathare is known across Kenya for grassroots football - the Mathare Youth Sports Association started here and has grown into one of the biggest youth sports programmes in Africa.
