Formula 1 heads to the United States this weekend for the US Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, which has become a firm favourite on the calendar since its inaugural race in 2012.

Austin is one of three F1 events to be staged in the US, with Miami hosting a grand prix in May and Las Vegas holding a night race in November.

The sport has grown in popularity in the US in recent years, helped by Netflix's Drive to Survive series.

However, it's fair to say F1 and the US has had a mixed relationship over the years. Some races were very successful and fondly remembered; others less so.

The first F1 United States Grand Prix took place in Sebring, Florida, in 1959. Australian Jack Brabham won the first of his three drivers' championships by pushing his Cooper over the line after it ran out of fuel on the last lap. His fourth place was enough to beat Britons Tony Brooks and Stirling Moss to the title.
