Hosting the World Athletics Championships in Nairobi in 2029 will leave a "legacy of experience and expertise", according to the sport's top official Sebastian Coe.

Sebastian Coe's third and final term as World Athletics president will end next year

World Athletics president Sebastian Coe hopes holding the 2029 World Championships in Nairobi will create a "legacy" for Africa.

The Kenyan capital will become the first city on the continent to stage the event, having been awarded hosting rights last month ahead of London and Rome.

After the East African nation failed with a bid for the 2025 edition, Coe reiterated it was "the right time" for World Athletics to tread new ground.

"All our instincts - and certainly mine - was to have that opportunity to build our sport to an even higher level in the continent," Coe told BBC Focus on Africa.
