Rob Finnerty: US journalist apologises to Kenyans after they ‘greet’ him over remarks about Nairobi

US journalist Rob Finnerty sparked anger after comparing US cities to Nairobi on air, prompting Kenyan backlash and a public apology to the capital online.

A US television journalist found himself at the centre of an online storm after making remarks on live TV that drew an immediate and fierce response from Kenyans.

While anchoring a news segment on immigration, Rob Finnerty suggested that the influx of migrants into American cities was turning them into places that resembled Nairobi rather than New York.

He added that authorities had no clear picture of where the migrants were coming from, then handed over to a colleague who went on to interview several people on the street.

The irony that none of those interviewed had any connection to Nairobi or Kenya did little to soften the blow. If anything, it sharpened Kenyans' irritation.

Within a short time, Kenyans had descended on Finnerty's social media pages, flooding his comment sections with sharp rebuttals.
