The businessman pays phone snatchers up to Sh500 per handset for the top brands like iPhone and Samsung.

The pursuit of a robbery with violence suspect has led to the doorstep of a businessman whose retail empire stretches across Kenya and Uganda. Police believe that he is at the centre of a phone-snatching syndicate feeding the cross-border stolen handsets trade.

By the time of going to press, detectives were working on securing warrants to allow them to search the businessman’s premises and seize potential evidence.

On Saturday, police arrested a robbery with violence suspect who, during questioning, revealed his role in the syndicate allegedly run by the businessman.

A Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) probe indicates that the businessman operates seven phone retail shops in Nairobi, and that he recently opened an eighth store in Kampala.
