Toxic haze has shrouded parts of Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore for weeks as Jakarta struggles to contain fires that have scorched large tracts of Borneo and Sumatra, with the smoke drifting across the region.

"I have instructed all state education departments and district education offices to continue monitoring the haze situation and to take immediate action should conditions require it," Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said in a statement.

"I also understand that any decision to close schools will affect the daily affairs of parents," she added in the statement, which listed fully or partially closed schools in five states, as well as two federal territories.
