Lamu residents ask gov't for alternative land as Dangote refinery project takes shape

Stories

Thousands of residents from the Magogoni area in Lamu are asking the government to provide them with alternative settlement areas, as uncertainty grows over their future following the groundbreaking of the Dangote East Africa refinery.

The residents said they have not challenged the government's call to vacate the land, but allege that land grabbers are attempting to mislead them and the government over ownership of the area.

The concerns come against the backdrop of President William Ruto's declaration that the government will not compensate people occupying public land.

Three days after the groundbreaking of the Dangote refinery in Lamu, a cloud of uncertainty hangs over Magogoni, as tractors continue to work on the land.
