Ruto Hints at Moving Venue for 2026 Jamhuri Day Celebrations

Over the last four years, key national holidays have been held outside the capital city of Nairobi as parts of efforts to promote diversity and encourage nationalism.

President William Ruto has hinted that the government could move the 63rd Jamhuri Day celebrations from Kiambu County to Taita-Taveta County if the construction of the new Vindo Stadium in Voi is completed in time.

Speaking during the issuance of title deeds in the coastal county on Thursday, October 1, Ruto said the decision would ultimately depend on whether the facility is ready and whether residents want the national celebrations held in the area.

“I was there last week during inspections, and I want to assure you that before December 12, the stadium will have been completed. If you want us to hold the Jamhuri Day celebrations at the venue, you will be the ones to decide,” Ruto said.

Jamhuri Day is marked every December 12 to commemorate Kenya's attainment of independence and its transition into a republic.
