Ruto’s Ksh490 Billion Nuclear Project Taken to International Court

The project has faced delays following protests and several court cases that have dragged on for years.

Kenya’s planned nuclear power project, previously estimated at Ksh490 billion, has been taken to the East African Court of Justice over concerns about its proposed location near Lake Victoria and its potential environmental and regional impact.

The project is now planned to generate between 2,000 and 5,000 megawatts of electricity at a site in Bondo, Siaya County, near the eastern shores of Lake Victoria. The plant would be Kenya’s first nuclear power facility.

The case was filed on September 23 by Dickens Ochieng, a Siaya resident and human rights lawyer, who is challenging the government’s decision to pursue the project in the Lake Victoria region.

Ochieng wants the court to examine whether the proposed location is suitable for a nuclear facility, citing environmental and ecological risks associated with placing the plant near the shared freshwater lake, according to Mongabay News.
