Public health begins long before a patient reaches a hospital. It is shaped in homes, communities, schools, workplaces, farms and markets; by the safety of our food and water; by the condition of our environment; and by the ability of our health system to prevent, detect and respond to threats. Human health is therefore inseparable from the health of animals and the ecosystems we share.
