Treasury documents indicate that the government plans to expand the highway into a four-lane dual carriageway, with tolling also being considered as a possible way to finance the project.
President William Ruto has confirmed that the government is speeding up negotiations to dual the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway following growing calls for urgent safety interventions along the busy route.
Speaking on Wednesday, November 4, at the Industrialisation Summit held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi, Ruto said the government had a plan to expand the highway and would soon announce details of the project.
“We are negotiating on the dualling of the road all the way from Mombasa to Malaba, and it is going to happen. This is going to happen. We have a plan on how the dualling of the road is going to happen, which we will be explaining to you soon after,” the President stated.
Ruto said the government was also planning to dual 2,500 kilometres of trunk roads across the country to improve transport and connectivity.
