Speaking during the 17th Africa Day for Food and Nutrition Security, officials called for governments to move beyond policy commitments and allocate resources towards climate-smart agriculture, nutritious local foods, school feeding programmes and stronger markets for smallholder farmers.
Delegates argued that integrating agriculture, health, water management and nutrition into national development plans would be critical to building resilient food systems and accelerating economic growth.
George Esunge Fominyen, the World Food Programme (WFP) Representative to the African Union and the UN Economic Commission for Africa, said water, food security and nutrition should be addressed as interconnected challenges rather than separate policy priorities.
“Very few meals can be prepared without water,” Fominyen said.
“The crops we grow, and the animals we raise, depend on it.”
