Residents Protest Over Multi-Million-Shilling Shrine Project

The residents cite that the project holds significant cultural heritage to them, and might interfere with the ecological significance of the place.

Morop Hill residents of Ewalel Chapchap Ward in Baringo County staged protests on October 28, opposing a Ksh50 million pilgrimage shrine project they say threatens the ecosystem.

The residents insisted that Morop Hill must remain in its natural state and demanded that the project be suspended immediately.

They argue that preparations for the shrine began without adequate public participation, which they say directly violates their rights.

According to the residents, the project also kicked off before an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report was submitted to the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).

The proposed development reportedly includes a 15- to 30-metre cross, a chapel and tourism facilities, which locals fear could damage the hill's fragile ecosystem.
