SOS Children’s Villages Kenya (SOS CV Kenya) is a member of the SOS Children's Villages International (CVI) Federation. SOS CV Kenya is a child-focused Non-Governmental Organization established in Kenya in 1973 to provide care and support to children who have lost or are at risk of losing the care of their biological family. The organization’s vision is “Every child belongs to a family and grows with love, respect, and security” and its programs are driven by the mission of “building families for children in need, helping them shape their own futures and sharing in the development of their communities”. In this regard, the organization works to reduce poverty; increase access to quality education and decent work; reduce inequalities and build strong institutions in line with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 1, 4,8,10, and 16. This is done through programs that are geared towards addressing the political, economic, health, and socio-cultural root causes of child vulnerability and family separation. The programs focus on Alternative Care, Family Strengthening, Youth Empowerment, Education, Health, Advocacy and Humanitarian Action. SOS Children’s Villages in Kenya implements programmes in five (5) of Kenya’s 47 Counties namely Nairobi, Mombasa, Uasin Gishu, Kisumu and Meru. We seek to recruit a suitably qualified person to fill the position of ECD Head Teacher.
POSITION: ECD HEAD TEACHER, SOS CHILDREN’S VILLAGES SCHOOL, MOMBASA
Position summary: Reporting to the Head of Institution, Mombasa School, the position holder will support the supervision and effective coordination of the Pre-Primary Section, providing leadership and guidance to the teaching team to ensure quality teaching and learning.
The position holder will contribute to the growth and development of the section, including enrolment and the intellectual, spiritual, moral, social and physical development of young learners. As an instructional leader, they will promote effective teaching practices and facilitate appropriate, engaging and age-appropriate learning activities and experiences in line with professional teaching standards. The position holder will empower and support teachers within the section by strengthening their knowledge, skills, attitudes and values in line with the principles and requirements of Competency-Based Education (CBE). This will include providing guidance, coaching and support on teaching methodologies, classroom management, learner assessment and continuous improvement of learning outcomes.
In addition to supervising classroom teaching and learning, the position holder will promote learners’ participation in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities to support holistic development, creativity, confidence and the identification and nurturing of individual talents. Overall, the position holder will help create a safe, inclusive and stimulating learning environment that promotes quality education, learner wellbeing and the holistic development of young children.
Key performance areas and main responsibilities:
• Provide strategic and instructional leadership in the implementation of the Kenya Early Years Curriculum, ensuring effective curriculum delivery and alignment with applicable education standards and institutional priorities.
• Lead and oversee teaching and learning across the Pre-Primary Section, ensuring the effective planning, delivery, assessment and continuous improvement of learning experiences.
• Supervise and quality-assure teaching practice, ensuring teachers/facilitators maintain accurate and professional teaching records, lesson plans, schemes of work, assessment records and other required documentation.
• Champion child-centred, play-based and developmentally appropriate learning approaches that recognise the individual needs, abilities, interests and developmental stages of young learners.
• Monitor and analyse learner progress and section performance, using attendance, assessment and other relevant data to identify learning gaps, improvement priorities and appropriate interventions.
• Provide effective people leadership and supervision, including setting expectations, monitoring performance, providing regular feedback and promoting accountability among ECD staff.
• Build the professional capacity of the teaching team through structured coaching, mentoring, peer learning, professional development and sharing of effective ECD practices.
• Promote a safe, nurturing, inclusive and child-friendly learning environment, ensuring that children’s safety, safeguarding, health, dignity, participation and overall wellbeing remain central to all activities.
• Strengthen parent and stakeholder engagement by promoting effective communication and partnerships with parents, caregivers and relevant stakeholders in support of children’s holistic development and learning outcomes.
• Lead co-curricular and enrichment activities that promote creativity, social-emotional development, physical wellbeing, confidence and the identification and nurturing of children’s emerging talents.
