Why Nairobi Is One of the Most Remarkable Cities in the World

Where else can you attend a United Nations meeting in the morning, see lions in the afternoon, and enjoy a world-class dinner by evening? Only in Nairobi City.

Kenya's capital is more than a busy East African metropolis. Nairobi sits where a global city meets the wild, and that mix makes it unlike any other capital on Earth. Whether you live here, are moving here, or are planning a visit, these are the facts that make Nairobi one of the most remarkable cities in the world.

1. The only capital city with a national park inside it

Nairobi National Park lies just about 7 km from the city centre. It was established in 1946 as Kenya's very first national park.

The park is home to lions ( Simba) , buffalo (Nyati), giraffes ( Twiga), zebras ( Pundamilia), cheetahs( Duma), and over 400 bird species. It is also one of Kenya's most important sanctuaries for the endangered black rhino.

The result is a view you cannot find anywhere else: rhinos and giraffes grazing with Nairobi's skyscrapers in the background.

2. A name rooted in nature, a story built on rails

The name "Nairobi" comes from the Maasai phrase Enkare Nyirobi, meaning "the place of cool waters." It refers to the cool streams that once flowed through the area.

Nairobi began in 1899 as a supply depot on the Uganda Railway, which linked Mombasa to Lake Victoria. In just over a century, that small railway camp grew into one of Africa's largest and most influential cities. Today Nairobi County is home to more than 4.3 million people, according to the 2019 national census.

3. Near-perfect weather all year round

Nairobi sits about 1,795 metres above sea level, just south of the equator. That altitude gives the city a mild, pleasant climate most of the year: warm sunny days and cool evenings, without the extreme heat or freezing winters found in many world capitals.

Its tree-lined streets, parks, and gardens earned it the nickname "The Green City in the Sun."

4. A global diplomatic capital

Nairobi is home to the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON), one of the UN's four major headquarters alongside New York, Geneva, and Vienna. It is the only one in the Global South.

The city hosts the global headquarters of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and UN-Habitat. Hundreds of embassies, international NGOs, and multinational companies also run their African or regional operations from Nairobi.

5. The "Silicon Savannah"

Nairobi is one of Africa's leading technology and innovation hubs. In 2007, Kenya launched M-Pesa, the mobile money service that changed how the world thinks about digital payments and financial inclusion.

Today the city buzzes with startups, innovation hubs, and co-working spaces. Global technology companies have set up offices here, and Nairobi consistently ranks among Africa's top destinations for startup investment. For young people and entrepreneurs, it is a city of real opportunity. You are actually reading from Nairobicity.co.ke , one of the most recent startups and it's free to create your member account.

6. Wildlife encounters you won't find in any other city

Nairobi offers close-up wildlife experiences right inside the city:

  • Sheldrick Wildlife Trust elephant nursery: watch orphaned baby elephants being fed, cared for, and prepared for return to the wild.
  • The Giraffe Centre: hand-feed endangered Rothschild's giraffes from a raised platform, face to face.
  • Karura Forest: one of the largest urban forests in the world, with waterfalls, caves, cycling paths, and walking trails. It was saved from land-grabbing through the activism of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Wangari Maathai.

7. The world's safari gateway

"Safari" is a Swahili word meaning "journey," and Nairobi is where millions of those journeys begin. Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is one of Africa's busiest hubs, connecting the region to Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and the rest of Africa.

From Nairobi, you can reach the Maasai Mara, Amboseli, Lake Naivasha, and Hell's Gate within a few hours. The dramatic Great Rift Valley escarpment is less than an hour's drive from the city.

8. A vibrant culture, a world of flavours, and a city of champions

Nairobi brings together people from every Kenyan community and from across the globe. That diversity shows up everywhere:

  • Music: from Benga and Afro-fusion to the youth-driven Gengetone sound.
  • Matatu culture - Nganya/Manyanga: brightly painted minibuses with bold art, music, and personality.
  • Food: nyama choma joints, Swahili coastal dishes, Indian cuisine, and international restaurants across Westlands, Kilimani, and the CBD.
  • Creative industries: a growing film, fashion, and arts scene.

Kenya is also the world's long-distance running powerhouse, and Nairobi is at the heart of that story. The city's altitude and sporting heritage make it a magnet for athletes.

9. History and heritage at every turn

Nairobi's landmarks tell the story of Kenya's past, its struggle for independence, and its modern rise:

  • Nairobi National Museum: Kenya's history, culture, art, and natural heritage under one roof.
  • Karen Blixen Museum: the farmhouse made famous by the book and film Out of Africa.
  • Nairobi Railway Museum: the story of the railway that gave birth to the city.
  • Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC): an iconic landmark with panoramic rooftop views of the city.
  • Uhuru Gardens: the site where Kenya's flag was first raised at independence in 1963.

10. East Africa's business and conference capital

Nairobi is the leading financial and commercial centre of East and Central Africa. It hosts the Nairobi Securities Exchange, major regional banks, and the headquarters of companies serving markets across the continent.

The city regularly hosts major global gatherings, including UN environment assemblies and the Africa Climate Summit. Modern infrastructure such as the Nairobi Expressway keeps the city moving and open for business.

Nairobi: where the world meets the wild

Few cities on Earth combine global influence, booming innovation, rich culture, and untamed nature the way Nairobi does. It is a city to live in, invest in, and explore.
