Residents Stage Protest Over Govt's Multi-Billion Project

Images seen by Kenyans.co.ke showed residents hoisting twigs and placards as they protested outside the construction premises, forcing the police to intervene.

Residents living around the Thwake Dam construction site in Makueni have staged protests over alleged inadequate compensation for homes and businesses damaged by blasting activities at the project between 2023 and 2024.

The residents claim that some were paid as little as Ksh12,000 and Ksh22,000 despite incurring higher costs to repair their properties, with others forced to abandon their homes and businesses.

On Friday, November 6, the residents marched more than 10 kilometres from Mavindini town to the Thwake Dam construction site, demanding fair compensation and transparency in the assessment process.

Some residents said their houses developed cracks following repeated blasting activities, while others reported damage to business premises, forcing them to relocate or suspend their operations.
