Kenyan Nationals Charged in US Student Loan Fraud Scheme: "Hide in Nairobi, We'll Come For You"

US indicts five, including Kenyans, in a ghost student aid fraud scheme with $32m in confirmed losses; a $750,000 crypto seizure marks a historic first.

The United States Department of Justice has announced charges against five individuals, including several Kenyan nationals, as part of a nationwide crackdown on a student loan fraud operation known as Operation Ghostbusters, which exploited federal financial aid programmes using stolen American identities.

The Justice Department's National Fraud Enforcement Division, together with US Attorney's Offices in Virginia, Nebraska, and New Jersey, revealed the indictments, disclosing that fraudsters created fictitious "ghost students" enrolled at real educational institutions using the stolen identities of US citizens.

Federal Student Aid refunds were then diverted to bank accounts controlled by foreign actors, with Kenyan nationals playing a central role as both overseas conspirators and US-based money mules.
