Compare the cost of a tank with other options, such as buying from vendors occasionally or filling containers during supply hours. Sometimes a few large containers are enough.

Clean the tank periodically and keep it covered. Without cleaning, sediment and algae can build up and affect water quality.

If you rent, get written permission from the landlord or management first, and agree who owns it and who maintains it. Do not install heavy equipment on a roof or wall without approval.

Think about where it will sit. A full tank is heavy, so it needs a stable stand or platform, and the plumbing must be able to fill and draw from it properly.

Keep copies of every bill for several months. Looking at past consumption shows whether the recent bill is truly unusual.

Keep paying the undisputed part if possible, and record that you raised a dispute, so you avoid disconnection while the issue is reviewed. Ask how the company handles disputed bills.

If you rent, find out how the building bills water. Some landlords divide one main bill, and the calculation should be transparent. Ask to see the main bill and how your share was worked out.

Look at the account details, billing period and tariff on the bill. Errors in the account number or a wrong period can produce a bill that looks unreasonable.

If you are looking for a house, ask existing tenants about water, not only the agent. A question about the last month's supply is very revealing.

Store water safely in clean, covered containers. Standing water that is open or dirty can become a health risk, so cover it and clean containers regularly.

Keep a note of the days and times water comes. After a few weeks, you will see a pattern, and you can plan storage, laundry and cooking around it.

Ask your caretaker or neighbours whether the supply is intermittent for everyone or only you. If the whole building is affected, the issue is probably in the incoming line, tank or pump.

Shared meters or sub-metering in rental buildings can cause confusion. If your landlord splits one bill among tenants, ask to see the main bill and the calculation.

Check whether the bill includes arrears, fees or adjustments from earlier months. Sometimes the high amount is a carry-over rather than new consumption.

To check for hidden consumption, switch off all appliances and see whether the meter still records usage. If it keeps running, something is still drawing power or the meter needs checking.

Take a photo of your meter reading at the same time each month. Your own record shows whether the meter and the bill agree and makes disputes much easier to settle.

Keep a charged phone, power bank and a torch or lamp ready. A small backup plan removes most of the stress of an unexpected outage.

If outages are frequent in your estate, keep a simple record of dates and durations. A list is more persuasive than a general complaint when you raise it with the utility or your landlord.

Never touch fallen lines, damaged poles or sparking equipment. Stay well away, warn others, and report the hazard immediately because it is an emergency.

Unplug sensitive appliances such as TVs, fridges and computers during an outage. Power can return with a surge, and switching them off protects them.

Write down the reference number you are given, and the time you reported. If the outage continues, quoting that number when you follow up helps.

If the meter is faulty, report it through Kenya Power's official channels. Do not open or tamper with the meter yourself, because that is dangerous and may be treated as an offence.

Do not buy another token as a test before understanding the error. If the first one was valid, you could end up with two tokens and still not know the cause.

If the token was already used, check whether it loaded earlier or whether someone else with access to your meter loaded it. The meter history can show whether it was accepted.

Keep the full purchase message: token digits, units, amount, meter number and transaction code. This is what Kenya Power customer care needs to trace your purchase.
