The explanation comes amid public debate over the source of funds the government would use to host the two European giants in Nairobi on January 5, 2027.
Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi has clarified that the government will not fund the inaugural match at the Raila Odinga International Stadium between Bayern Munich and Ajax, revealing that the game will be funded by the private sector.
Mwangi's clarification comes amid claims that the government is planning to spend billions on hosting the two European giants, with the public questioning where the funds would come from.
Speaking during a funeral service for nominated Senator Veronicah Maina's father, Nduati Kamachu, on Saturday, October 31, the PS maintained that the funding for the teams had come from private sponsorship. However, he did not reveal how much it would cost to host the two European giants.
"We are not using government money. We have gotten a private sponsor who has supported us to bring the two teams here," Mwangi stated.
